I have been lucky enough to be a part of a lot of things here at Rockhurst High School thus far.  One of my favorite parts is being an assistant coach for the varsity soccer team.  We are currently on our run to the state championship and this experience has brought me back to all my high school memories.  The best part for me has been the relationships with the coaches and the players.  Each individual has helped me grow in ways I had never thought of.  I have learned so many things about coaching that I never knew happened behind the scenes.  Coaches put in countless hours outside of practice and game time in order to field a successful team.  Fortunately for me, the other coaches have showed me exactly how to do that.  They have also showed me how to be a coach and a teacher at the same time, which has been stressful at times.  Dealing with the players throughout the season has been incredibly rewarding.  I have been learning how to interact with them on the field and in the classroom, as well as how to effectively coach them.  While I have a long way to go in becoming a good coach, my experience here at Rockhurst High School has highlighted the benefits of sports and how sports can be a positive influence in a young man’s life.

Coaching reminds me about the care for the whole person just as much as teaching does.  We want to have a successful team, but the most important thing is teaching these boys how to be men.  I have had great examples here at Rockhurst High School in doing just that and this year has produced memories I will draw from for years to come.
